Yihe Daida, Ph.D., M.S. is an epidemiologist and joined the Center for Integrated Health Care Research in 2006. She is passionate about improving maternal and child health and believes that delivery of preventive health services to this population can influence not only the life course of mothers and children, but also the health of future generations. Her specific interest is in how breastfeeding shapes the development of gut bacteria in infants, and its downstream benefits in protecting against obesity and diabetes. This interest evolved from Dr. Daida’s previous work on ethnic differences in upper body fat and nutritional assessments of Asian and Pacific Islander children and young adults.
As an epidemiologist in a health care system, Dr. Daida has conducted population-based research on chronic and infectious diseases utilizing electronic health (EHR) data. With the goal of informing clinical practice, these research rely heavily on the richness of the EHR and use population-based approach to conduct "real world" research in health systems. Much of her current and previous work focus on teasing apart the complex network of biomedical, social and behavioral issues that influence disease outcome. Dr. Daida served/continue to serve as Co-Investigator on several federally funded studies on cardiovascular health of Asian Americans, Native Hawaiian and Other Pacific Islanders, vaccination during pregnancy and lactation outcomes, mental health, liver cancer, hepatitis B and C, non-tuberculous mycobacteria infection.
Dr. Daida received her PhD in epidemiology and Master’s degree in nutritional sciences from the University of Hawaii at Manoa.

- UNDERSTANDING THE MULTILEVEL DRIVERS OF LIVER CANCER DISPARITIES
-
While most cancer incidence and mortality in the United States are declining, the burden of liver cancer is increasing; yet, we do not understand what causes 40% of these cancers. Furthermore, this cancer impacts racial/ethnic groups disproportionately, with minority racial/ethnic groups who are diagnosed at rates approximately twice that of non-Hispanic Whites. Therefore we propose to study the relative contribution of established and emerging risk factors, discover and validate novel risk factors, and to understand patient, clinician, health care system and geographic factors that influence surveillance; these findings can then be used to inform strategies in clinical and community settings to reduce the burden of liver cancer particularly for those at high risk.
